Sgt Edmundson flew his first and only op as rear gunner to Berlin on the 20 January 1944. During the flight he tried to adjust his oxygen with his gloves off and became unconscious. He suffered severe frostbite to his hands and was admitted to hospital on arrival back to Lissett. The frostbite was so severe and after several attempts to save his fingers all fingers on his left hand and part of the thumb were amputated. He was discharged from the RAF on medical grounds on 28 December 1944 and considered fit for civilian duties.
He was replaced in the crew initially by F/S Owen.
F/S Williams and crew were failed to return on 19 February 1944. Six were taken POW, but the seventh crewmember was killed.
